In the previous work in our Chinese lab, we had proposed that the fruit extracts of some of the Chinese wild Citrus are candidates for clinical application, e.g. preventing and ameliorating obesity and obesity-related metabolic disturbances. China is one of the most important centers of origin of Citrus genetic resources. Mining metabolites of wild Chinese Citrus for novel medical applications appears promising. As an initial step, we had analyzed some interesting secondary metabolites from Citrus with focus on phenolic and volatile compounds via high-performance liquid chromatography. To develop these metabolites for application, in the current work we probed for the potential of these Citrus fruit extract as sources of anti-cancer compounds by screening their activity in an in vitro assay for the nucleation of porcine brain tubulin. we compare potential effects of extracts originating from different clusters of Citrus with reference to the Chinese classification system for the genus Citrus (Guan et al., preparing). Depending on the type of extracts, we find different specific effects upon microtubules, such as changes in microtubule number, length, or non-linear elongation indicating different molecular targets. Si Tan from SW Uni is currently conducting part of her Ph.D. study in KIT, Germany under the frame of mining secondary metabolites in fruit extracts of Chinese wild citrus affecting microtubules.
